Its creator, Laurent Mourguet, a former silk worker who became a tooth-puller, brought Guignol to life at the beginning of the 19th century in Lyon. His statue, along with Guignol’s, can be found on Rue du Doyenné in Old Lyon.

Guignol became the voice of the common people and a proud representative of the Lyonnais dialect. Other characters soon followed: Madelon, Gnafron, Toinon, the Policeman, Canezou, the Bailiff, Madame Quiquenet, the Thief...
