The city of Lyon is known for its hand puppets thanks to the famous Guignol of Lyon.

Guignol is somewhat the emblem of the city of Lyon. He is the main character in the hand puppet theater of Lyon’s folklore.

His creator, Laurent Mourguet, a former silk worker turned tooth puller, brought him to life in the early 19th century in Lyon. You can find his statue alongside Guignol's, on Rue du Doyenné, in Vieux-Lyon.

Guignol became the spokesperson for the common people. He is also the true representative of the Lyon dialect. Other characters followed: Madelon, Gnafron, Toinon, the Policeman, Canezou, the Bailiff, Madame Quiquenet, the Thief…
